Grooming helps to teach your puppy to accept being handled; it also enhances the bond between the two of you. Regular handling will allow you to get to know your puppy’s body. This can be particularly useful as it can help you to detect any health problems in the early months of your puppy’s life.
With your puppy’s own special brush, start grooming for short sessions, just sufficient to touch them once over their whole body. Gradually lengthen the sessions, and when they accept what you’re doing and has stood still for a while, stop and reward them. This could be a walk, a game or a meal; it will help to make your puppy realize that standing still brings rewards, which makes grooming easier and more enjoyable for the both of you.
Tabletop grooming: If you groom your puppy from home, try grooming them on a table so they are already familiar with this when they visit the vet or a groomer for the first time.
Sensitive areas: Your puppy’s head area is very sensitive, so be extra gentle when you’re brushing there If your puppy starts to wriggle, hold them firmly with both hands until they stop. Talk to them in a soft and friendly manner and praise them whenever they are still
The general rule of thumb is that they should be no more than 16 weeks old, as younger pups are easier to train. Your pup should have had all of their injections before being professionally groomed for the first time.
We start with a puppy intro package this just gets them introduced to the grooming environment. The different sounds and smells as this can all be quite frightening to them to start with. We want to ensure that your puppy’s first groom is fun and enjoyable, as it is essential to their grooming life that they are comfortable when being groomed. It is imperative that we make their first few visits fun, rewarding and enjoyable. When it comes to your pups first groom, they will receive:
- A nice warm bath with a natural based shampoo to help aid in healthy skin & hair growth,
- light blow dry, if they are too scared of the noise of the dryer I will mainly towel dry them, with their regular visits to me they will come to realize there is nothing to be scared of.
- A gentle brush and comb through, with plenty of cuddles in between!
- A little hair trim around the eyes, hygiene area and feet.
All this is done with positive reinforcement, plenty of puppy treats and a gentle tone of voice. They will also get time to have a little break in between for play time to build a trust between me and your pup. Finally Arnie’s Pawfect Grooms looks forward to meeting your latest addition to your family!
